There are two general types of clothes dryers: gas and electric. Both refer to the method used to raise the temperature of the air flowing through the dryer drum. Tumbling action is usually electrically powered. The electric dryer uses a coiled wire, or heating element, that is heated with electric current. Electric dryers usually have a 4 wire plug and need a 30 amp, 240 volt circuit. The gas dryer uses a gas burner that burns natural gas, in most cases, to form a jet of hot gases that are directed into a venture chamber, which uses Bernoulli’s principle to pull in ambient air and raise its temperature. Gas dryers require 110 volts for the motor and various electric parts such as the timer, fuse, thermostats, door switch, and various other switches. If your dryer fails, it is recommended to use original dryer parts for the repair.
The most common problem with dryers is not enough heat. This is usually caused by a clogged vent. Make sure there is no lint inside the dryer and check the vent hose in the back of the dryer. Clean the lint filter after or before each use. Replace the lint screen if torn or damaged. If a gas dryer doesn’t heat at all, the problem may be with the gas valve coils, the igniter, or the flame sensor. If an electric doesn’t heat at all, the problem may be with the thermal fuse or the heating element.
