For example when washing a pair of queen size sheets the powder detergent does not dissolve. Moreover, it appears not to be spinning out the water from clothes as it used to. I checked the belts and the drive belt appeared loose and was able to "pluck-off" the pump belt. Neither appeared worn just loose. The machine was purchased in May of 1997. So it might be time to replace the belts, but how do I know that this is a belt problem? Could the transmission be failing causing the above noted problems? Just lean the washer back and roll the old belts off the pulleys and then roll the new belts AP4011179 onto the pulleys. Obtained replacement that came with both belts so I installed both but, the one for the motor to the transmission doesn't have as much slack, so it causes motor to overload and kick off its thermal saftey as it doesn't slip at all. I can only use the old belt for motor to transmission and the new belt for water pump but washer won't spin up as good with heavy loads but it does spin up. Point is; the motor to transmission replacement is not a proper replacement it looks like to me. Upon close inspection the new belt is ever so slightly shorter than the old one, but not by much. Also, I see no way of ajusting motor to transmission at least from the bottom like the water pump has but should I mess with it if the replacement is correct. What do I do? Asked by Chris for Model Maytag A710 Chris, You're going to need a new set of belts, but I'm pretty sure theres more to it than that. Are you sure the washer spins and drains ? Some quick checks to make : Open the lid and check for something stuck between the tub cover and spin basket. Slide the washer away from the wall a few inches, remove the front panel(two phillips head screws), raise and prop up the front of the washer and remove both belts. Check the belts for wear and burn spots, check that the motor assembly moves back and forth freely. Reach under the washer and turn the transmission pulley in both directions, Clockwise is the spin and it should take some strength to turn the pulley, counterclockwise is the agitate mode and should be easier to turn. If the pulley won't turn counterclockwise you'd have a bad transmission, if the pulley won't turn , or is extremely hard to turn in the clockwise direction, you'd have a seizee tub bearing assembly.
