Why would the burner grate [FRIGIDAIRE Burner Grate (Part Number: AP2126381)]enamel coating start exploding off the grate in small chunks creating a threat to the cook and landing on the floor creating a hazard to bare feet? What can be done other than to replace grates? Are new grates any safer?
Why are new grates so costly: $86 each, four grates needed?
ANSWER Russ, the burner grates and cooktop surface are Porcelain coated(ceramic glass) They can "chip" if banged or knocked against something during the cleaning or cooking process. They can "graze" when exposed to excessive, high heat(oversized pots and pans, boil outs, and excessive high heat cooktimes). At present the grates and cooktop surfaces are still produced in the same manner as always, theres no alot to be done, except replace the grates, and be a bit more cautious in the cleaning and cooking process. Thanks and Good Luck
