Replaced both the defrost unit and defrost timer and all was well. However, I had left the entire control unit loose in the fridge (in case it didn't work). A couple of weeks later, I stuck the styrofoam piece back into it's socket and put the face plate back on. Now it has quit functioning properly again. So, does it have something to do with the styrofoam or maybe some kind of loose connection in the temp control unit? Does cold air from the freezer come thru this styrofoam area? If so, does a problem with the air return duct come into play? I have looked at it, can see no problems, can it be removed and checked? thxs for your help, Jim

ANSWER Hi Jim. If the "return duct" was not damaged and you placed it back in the duct, then there should be no effect on the return air. The fresh food control will control the compressor run time. You Will probably have a loose wire on a connection. We are going to need you to give us an exact model and serial # so we can assist you. Thank you.

ANSWER Jim, does the freezer work properly ? Are you discussing the air inlet, in the upper top corner, or the return cover in the lower middle of the side wall ? Either one of them could create an air flow problem and cause the refrigerator to warm up. But from the sounds of things, my best guess would be the damper and air tunnel in the upper corner of the compartment, and or a loose connection. Thanks and Good Luck.
