I can confirm that this part requires you to tap the screw holes. Actually, you only have to tap 3 of the 4 because the one which screws in from the bottom doesn't need tapping. For my GE WPRE8100G0WT washer this meant getting a 1/4" 20 thread tap. Not a big deal, but an annoyance as this meant another hour spent on this job going to get the tap and an extra $10. I also highly recommend replacing the bushing (get the tube of lubricant) and while your at it you might as well get a new belt and DO get the belt install kit. The bushing was tough to get out, but I found using a hammer and big socket that matched the size of the bushing worked great.
