The fridge is a bit over 7 1/2 years old. The ice maker only dispenses crushed ice even when cubed ice is selected. I opened the door(depressing switch) to make sure I could view the ice maker working. The stirrup does not move at all regardless of the selection. I am almost sure it is the solenoid. Is it possible for the solenoid to freeze or is it probably just defective?

Chris for Model Number GSH25JFRBB

ANSWER Hello Chris, It is common for the solenoid to freeze up, especially if there is an air leak. I'm referring to the ice dispense door or the door seals on the unit. Otherwise, the freezer temperature is probably set too cold. You can test the theory by heating the solenoid area with a hair dryer for at least 10 minutes. You can check it while your heating it by reaching in and moving it up and down. If it will move, try it with the dispense button and it should work. Once you can move it by hand, if it doesn't work, the solenoid has failed. I have replaced very few of these as most that isn't operating properly are indeed frozen.
