I have a GE side by side. The coils in the freezer keep freezing over about every week. I replaced the defroster heater and thermostat twice. The second time I replaced the heater and thermostat the heater would not come on. I took and put it in the repair shop. I just got it out of the repair shop which they checked everything out including the mother board, which was fine. The only thing they said it needed was freon and it was added. My defrost heater will still not come on. What else could it possibly be?

ANSWER Hello Gidget,
There are basically five parts to the defrost circuit on these units. The defrost heater WR51X10101, the defrost thermostat WR50X10068, the evaporator thermistor, the main control board, and the wiring harness (which is mostly unserviceable). Basically, the evaporator thermistor tells the main control board the temperature of the evaporator coils. The heater melts the frost from the coils. The defrost thermostat prevents the temperature from the defrost cycle from getting warm enough to melt frozen foods. The main control sends commands to the individual components based on the information it has received. If the heater and thermostat have been replaced, all that's left is the evaporator thermistor WR55X10025 and the main control board WR55X10942, (since the harness is unserviceable).
