If the defrost thermostat fails to open, will the heater time out and be shut off by the board.(What is max. defrost time?) I assume the defrost is cycle initiated by the board at some specific interval. Would this allow the ice to melt and freeze in a clump(stalagmite) in the freezer compartment and there be no noticeable thawing of items in the freezer. All temperatures appear to stay in normal ranges. Are there any other issues if the defrost thermostat malfunctions? Will the unit go into defrost if the defrost thermostat doesn't close? I think my problem is the thermostat doesn't aways open soon enough???
ANSWER Hello BobH. If you are getting an ice problem like you are describing, then the issue sounds like a water leak issue and not a defrost issue, or the drain is clogged and the water is not draining. Again, it does not sounds like a defrost issue. I would start with cleaning out the drain tube. Hope this helps. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/refrigerator-freezer-repair/173916-kenmore-top-mount-refrig-h2o-build-up.html
