Removed clothes and found black marks on them .Removed agitator and saw black liquid that appeared to look like oil,it also smelled like gear oil. is the transmission bad or is it a seal that can be replaced?

ANSWER Hi John. It is a known fact that if fabric softener is shelf old or has recently frozen in transport , it will accelerate the "age" of the product. Turning it bad and then it will go into a brown and then black color which is easily mistaken for oil. So you just have to look under the fabric softener cap and under the agitator. If you are sure it is oil, then your best bet is to change the whole transmission assy. part # WH38X10002. It comes with the tub seal. You can not get the top trans. seal separately. Thank You.
