My Kenmore 700 washer with direct drive, does not spin.It is about six years old. It washes and drains, but does not spin; it tries to spin but does not. It sometimes smell like burning rubber when it tries to spin. I can hear the motor humming, but the basket will not spin.
I replaced the lid switch, because it was damaged. I removed the motor coupling checked it and it looked fine. I also checked the clutch assembly and I was not able to move the lining with my finger; when I removed it, the lining looked good. When I reassembled the washer, it worked fine for one cycle and then started smelling and not spinning again.
What could be stopping my washer from spinning and causing the burning smell? Some websites say it could be the transmission or the motor or both. If it is, how do I test them before buying the parts?
ANSWER Hello Eddie,
It sounds like your clutch assembly 285785 has gone out and you would want to replace it.
