the freezer has been icing up in the bottom basket for some time the coils also had a lot of ice on them the bottom basket was completely full of ice. we used a hair dryer and defrosted the bottom basket area but it froze up again very soon finally everything in the freezer started to defrost. does this seem to be the automatic defrost timer or what else could be the problem. the door was not opened very often

ANSWER Tony, You need to check a couple of things first. Check and make sure the door gasket is sealing to the frame all the way around, and especially along the bottom. Remove the evaporator cover (the back wall inside the freezer) and check the drain tube 3-60696-001 for blockage or collapse, and decide the area and assembly with hot water and towels. and also check the drain hose for a proper seat and attachment to the defrost drip pan.
