My Whirlpool Duet washer water distribution assembly has become erratic, sometimes dumping the softner and soap together and sometimes skipping the soap altogether. The top of the distribution box was encrusted with calcium and water deposits. Cleaned that out and reassembled to watch. The accutator motor seems to work fine, but the lever connection and water distribution lever seems stiff, they seem to get stuck under the cam and the lever connection doesn't hit the II, III and IV marks precisely. It seems like the spring has lost enough tension to pull back the lever connection/water distribution lever to the proper point.
I also pulled out the soap tray and watched the water dispense as I manually moved the distribution lever back and forth. Water comes out accurately above the soap box but when I move the lever to the bleach and softner boxes, water comes out all over the place.
My diagnosis is to replace the nozzle, levers, spring and cam. I also suspect that there is a blockage or calcium buildup inside the water channels in the top of the box. Can I clean that out (LimeAway?) or should I just replace the entire distribution box.
And by the way, what is the position I on the top of the box? It's clear that the cam/lever design never goes over to that position; water is dispensed into the soap box on II, bleach at III and softner at IV. Can you explain that? Just curious.
Thanks for your help.
ANSWER Scott, Great description and diagnosis, you're on target. Replace the 8181726, 8181725,8181724,8181727. They have a tendency to flex, and go out of alignment with age, and usage. Thanks
