Is the silicon grease absolutely necessary? Does it simply ease installation, or actually provide a seal? I took out my old gasket to trim off the inner edge because it was disintegrating. I temporarily reinstalled it after wiping off the foul gunk and grease, before I noticed that the grease comes with the new gasket. However, one part seller had this listed as requiring "Hazardous Materials" special shipping. I'm not so sure I want that in there with the water that cleans my dishes. Hopefully the old seal will hold up until I figure out what to do. No leaks *yet*. Thanks!
It is not necessary to put the silicone grease around the seal as it is used for ease of installation.
