When the agitator is in motion, a loud grating sound is heard but this noise does not affect the functioning of the wash cycle (that is, the clothes are washed properly). The spin cycle, however, is quiet and normal. All other cycles operate normally with no water leaks. Does this suggest a damaged pinion and/or beveled gear part(s)?
ANSWER Winston, Yes, you're on the right track. A "grating" noise,in agitate only could be due to a worn out gear, but is most likely due to a worn out upper (agitator) bearing. Replacing the transmission would be required, so either way, you've got it coverred with a new transmission. Also, while you're at it, add 1 teaspoon of 90 weight gear oil to the brake package, it's about time for it to start making noise, and will need to be lubed soon. Thanks
