Ordered part AP4261193 (Kit, Face Seal w/Air) from you on Monday and it was delivered on Tuesday. Thanks for the quick turnaround. The instruction sheet, 16023436, with the kit is a little confusing when it comes to applying the sealant and warns that by applying incorrectly could cause a leak. It seems to be saying to apply a bead of sealant around the bottom of the outer tub flange wall before putting the seal head on. Bit when you then put the seal head on, it will contact the sealant. Is this okay ? The instructions say not to allow the sealant to contact the sealing surface of the water seal. Is the bottom not considered the sealing surface. After putting the seal head on the flange the instructions say to apply a small amount of sealant around outer edge of water seal and tub. The picture however shows the sealant under the seal. Does the sealant go under the outer edge of the seal head or around the outside of it after it is pressed down. Any advice you can provide to make this clearer would be appreciated. Thanks.
ANSWER Walt, You want to apply a thin coat of sealant to the lower outside bottom edge of the seal assembly. First you need to make sure the area where the seal seats(outer tub flange) is clean and free of oil or grease. The top portion of the face seal ( encompassing the brass colored ring) must remain clean and oil free, so you don't want the sealant to squish up and out of the tub flange assembly, and get on the top portion of the seal face. Follow the remainder of the instructions(especially the vaseline on the s/s and brass rings) and you'll be fine.
