I replaced a stem seal kit(6-2095720) about six to eight months ago and now the tub seal is leaking. I took out the seal and found that the nylon part of the seal was cracked. What could I do to help to prevent this from happening again when I install the new seal? Thanks.
ANSWER Dennis, To do this repair properly, you'll need to repalce the tub bearing kit 6-2040130 and the tub seal kit 6-2095720 together. A cracked or broken "carbon" ring, is a good indication of over torquing the mounting stem, or improper installation. Remember, when you install the "boot" make sure it is level and properly seated on the tub flange, and when installing the mounting stem/tub support do not over torque it (hand tighten with the spanner wrench, then a light tap with the hammer, or the ball of your fist is enough torque), and put the washer through the final spin cycle (no water) to seat the seal ring properly.
