I bought and replaced the stem and seal on a Maytag Washing Machine. The leak problem is solved. But, when I put the washer back together I ran into a couple problems. First, When I put the tub lid back on and tightened the ring, no matter how much I tighten the it, the lid can easily be pulled right off. Is that normal? Second, when the washer hits the spin cycle, the top of the inner tub is rubbing against the tub lid. I have tried to raise the tub lid a small amount. I have tightened the ring as small as it will go. This solves the rubbing problem, but when the spin cycle starts it knocks the tub lid right off. It can't stay on. What am I doing wrong???
ANSWER Hello John,
Try putting a very small quantity of liquid soap on the inside of the metal ring, (not the rubber gasket). This will allow the ring to slip on the rubber and tight all the way around instead of just tightening at the screw. If you put too much the rubber gasket will slip too easily and cause you more issues. Also, use rubbing alcohol on the outer tub where the rubber seal contacts to prevent its' moving.
