The top part of the agitator does not seem to be working. I can turn it by hand without resistance. When the machine is working, it repeatedly turns maybe and 8th of a turn then comes back to where it starts. It does not appear to be moving the clothes in the water column as it should. Is there a relatively simple fix for this?

ANSWER Hello David,
With agitator not engaging it sounds like you need to get new agitator dogs 285811. The dogs are located under the fabric dispenser or cap in the center of the agitator.
