I have a Kenmore washing machine that is making a loud whining noise only when it is aggitating. This is the only time it is making this noise. Could you tell me what would could be making this noise?
The first thing I would check is for foreign objects in the pump 3363394. This would occur during the spin cycle also but would change its' tone in spin. To check this, remove the body and put a jumper wire across the lid switch connection. Remove the pump and start the unit with the pressure switch hose disconnected at the tub so you can blow gently into it and make the machine think it's full of water. When you now run the unit, the pump is hanging by the hoses but not attached to the motor. If it no longer makes the whine, the problem is in the pump.
The whining can also be caused by either the brake 285792 or the clutch 285785. I have on occasion heard the whining sound from a bad drive motor 661600, but this will occur during the spin cycle as well. The transmission 3360629 can also cause it but not as often as a slipping brake or clutch, but more often that a bad motor.
