I have a Maytag Model MER5765QAB. The bottom unit was making popping noises and flashing after a very long time heating up (it took an hour to get to 400 degrees). I turned the oven off. The top of stove works fine. I removed the cover and saw the left side of the element charred. In fact, the charred area broke off really easy (oven was cool by then). What's the best method to repair? Do I have to unplug the unit, or is turning off the circuit breaker OK?

ANSWER Hello Steve, Sounds like the bake element has burned out. The part number is W10276482. Be sure not to try to replace it with the power on to the unit as 120Vac rides on the element at all times. I would ohm it out first and make sure this is the problem as there is normally a thermal cut-out in series with the element. The element will show somewhere between 30 and 80 ohms of resistance.
