A grinding sound was mentioned above. The first time I ran the dishwasher after it had set for 3 1/2 years it made that sound. We have just replaced the motor /water pump assembly and the heater element. The water level seems to be just at the heater element and the bottom rack is getting cleaned but not the bottom. Additionally, an above question inquired about which type of screwdriver to use to undo the bottom assembly off of the upper wash arm in order to access the seal for the spray arm.
ANSWER Hello Tess,
There are normally two Torx bits needed in the teardown and re-assembly of the dishwasher pump and motor assembly, They are most commonly a T-15 and a T-20. Some models require a T-10. The grinding sound is normally a foreign item in the pump that is contacting the pump impeller. I usually tear it down and use a wet-vac because if you go digging around in there with your bare fingers and it is a glass sliver, you might get to meet some emergency room employees.
