This sounds like a bad connection. Once the control is set, the relay continues to pass the current until the primary voltage to the relay is discontinued. This will only happen when the off button is pressed or something else stops the voltage supply from being available to the primary relay coil. I would start at the breaker and work toward the unit. I have found many issues with the receptacles and power cords are losing connection. The power cord will lose connection at the terminal block if the nuts are not tightened sufficiently. If the receptacle is losing connection, there will be a burned spot on one of the prongs that go into the receptacle.
