ANSWER Dennis, The up and down play should not exceed 3/16 of an inch. The input shaft should measure 2 3/4 inches from the end of the transmission case to the end of the input shaft(+/-1/8 inch). If the tolerance between the clutch pulley, washers,and drive pulley exceed the 3/16 in. the helix will bypass the pulley cam and make a "machine gun" noise. Quite often, installing an additional flat washer will compensate for the excess and the washer will work properly. Good Luck and Thanks
