discovered overnight water leakage on the floor, with a faint attendant noise. I have not replaced the filter for years. Leak and noise stopped when I turned off the water valve. NOW: What is the correct order for checking to see what is causing the leak, and therefore what parts might need replacing?.

ANSWER Lee, The first thing that you will want to do is pull the kick plate off and turn the water back on. Using a flashlight check to see if you can locate a leak on the water lines. If not then look at the bottom of the filter housing for water to be dripping. If there is water coming from the bottom of the housing then twist the water filter out of the housing but not taking it completely out. See if the water drip slows or increases. If increasing then the filter housing is bad and if it slows then the water filter may have a crack in it.
