9 yr old Maytag top load washer. The fill function does not shut off and overflows the tub. I have to turn off at spigot seems to be on the hot side only. Also a sqealing / whistle type sound happened once on the fill cycle. Last year Hot side supply hose screen was clogged and not letting hot water once we cleaned it out the machine operated fine until now. This is in a seasonal home and the machine operates on softened well water is used infrequently but lots of loads 5-6 times a year.
ANSWER Fred, The post would indicate that the hot water solenoid plunger has stuck "open", and allows the washer to continually fill. As you found out, high pitched noises and squealing sounds during a fill cycle, is usually due to a water flow issue(clogged screens, high or low water pressure, etc.) the noise is the water attempting to flow through the diaphragm and valve body at the wrong pressure. Fill valve failures can occur at any time and can be due to various reasons, It's nothing you did or didn't do, and it's not really an issue in the washer or water supply.
