2 questions - the vent would raise, but the fan would not start. Then the vent started going up just a short distance and stopping. Push the button, and it would go up a bit more. Again and it would head back down. The fan would not start during any of this. Thanks

Answer Jeff, Based on the description it sounds like the gears that the vent rides on have stripped out and causing it to stop. This will not allow it to fully engage the limit switch to turn on the fan motor.

I am having intermittent up and down issues. I press the switch and sometimes works perfectly following the commands. Then magically it stops working sometimes. I replaced the up down switch already with the same issue. Should I go after the motor assembly or the up down contact switch? The fan is working fine.

Answer Hello Jeremy, The limit switch is normally the part on these that give issues. If you can access it you may find that it has been knocked a bit out of position or the actuating lever on the switch could be bent.

The on/off button needs to pushed three times in order for the unit to raise. It only requires to be pushed once for the unit to be lowered. Once it is raised, the fan works fine. Is it the on/off switch to be replaced?

Answer Hello Joe, This sounds like the contacts inside the switch 189968 are failing. The switch replacement should restore normal operation.

Our downdraft started going up and down on its own yesterday (I had left it in up position, but fan not running while I was cooking). It also started smelling electrical. The vent fits my countertop and corresponding Jennair glass cooktop. Do you think the switch o up/down limiter could have malfunctioned? We had a service call to the cooktop last week, but it seems to be working fine. Odd coincidence that the downdraft would malfunction a week later. Any recommendations on possible repair possibilities versus replacement on a 14-year old appliance?

Answer Hello Dan. You will need to test for power to the motor from the switch. If there is power at the motor, and it does not run, you will need to replace the motor 487567. Hope this helps.
