Washer tub would not spin and made a grinding noise while trying

My Repair & Advice
I replaced the bearings, but that was actuallhy a mistaken diagnosis. The actual problem was damaged teeth on the rotor spindle, so that the rotor spun without turning the washer tub. This also backed out the bolt holding on the rotor, After removing the bolt, there was a dark, powdery substance, which I assume was the remnants of the ground up spindle. I examined the inside of the rotor, which shoulld have serrations to match those on the axle. This were ground into gentle, rounded bumps instead of jagged teeth. I completed the correct diagnosis by running the washer with the back panel removed (being careful not to touch the exposed electrical connections) and observing that the rotor turned, though the washer tub did not.
All wasn't in vain. My 16-year old son got to help complete his first challenging home repair.
