I have a Kenmore upright and deep freezer. Both are in my unfinished basement and has been there for a while. They were both working when they were turned off a while ago. Now both will turn on but they won't produce any cooling at all. I believe its the temperature control unit but i don't want to purchase anything that may not be the problem. Could this be my problem?
If the unit turns on when you turn the dial on then the cold control is not the issue. You will want to check to see if the compressor is running and if not check to see if there is 120 vac getting to the compressor. If there is 120 vac at the overload and relay and the compressor is not running then the issue will most likely be the relay. If the compressor is running but unit is not cooling then you are looking at a sealed system issue, most likely the unit has a sealed system leak and would need to find out where the leak is coming from.
Show me how to replace the temperature control.
To replace the temp control you will need to unplug the unit and remove the control knob. Once removed there are 2 screws that you will remove from the compressor cover panel. Remove the control from the panel and switch the wires from one to the other. Paying attention to where the thermal tube on the thermostat is routed, route the new one the same way and push into the cabinet once the other is pulled out. Reinstall in reverse.
