Compressor did come on but only after I moved the control switch to a colder position (little by little just enough to turn the compressor on). Otherwise neither the freezer or refrig stays cold. Items in the freezer will start to deforst. I am currently at the coldest position on the switch and the compressor has turned off. Does the control switch need to be replaced?

Hi, My refrigerator has given me problems in the past on defrosting when I left on vacation during the winter. I found out this was due to the refrigerator not operting in cold temps. Now what is happening is I left for a week on business and set the thermostat for the house at 45. Came back and everything is defrosted. Usually in the past when the house warms up everything starts to work again. Now the compressor and circulation fan will run continuously and a thermometer shows the air temperature (in the freezer section) will fluctuate from 30 to 60 degrees. This will also cause the compressor to get very hot. I have unplugged the frig for 2 hours and the same symptoms occurs after plugging back in. I would like to believe that the temperature control thermostat is malfuctioning but more likely I think the compressor may be going bad and might as well replace the frig (it is already 9.5 years old). What do you think? Thanks for your help.

Frig. seemed ok- freezer not real cold (ice cream was very soft) checked freezer temp> +10 deg. with freezer control (damper) on colder- Pushed cold control to the almost colder (3 o'clock) postion then freezer is at -15 deg. Frig is located in the basement which is prob at 60 deg. now in winter. Wondering if its the cold control.

Back in april we noticed the meat in freezer was not completely frozen. After a few days of watching fridge and freezer temps I ordered a defrost timer and temp control . It was good until now 8 mos. later. Freezer is not freezing food again. We emptied freezer and I can feel heat coming out of upper freezer vent. I am assuming it is in defrost cycle too long? Should I try another timer? Note: I kept thermostats in both fridge and freezer and monitored temps for about one week.

Freezer is working fine. Fan in freezer does not turn so no air blows to the refridge. Do I check voltage to the fan first to determine if the fan failed? If no voltage, what would be the problem?
