This is a GE stacked unit. The washer is agitating and washing fine, but the spin cycle has become very loud over the past two or three months. As it is spinning, it appears to have quick surges of faster and slower accompanied by a change in noise. It appears as if it is going to take off. In the last week or so, the tub has become stiff. The wash is fine, but the spin will not begin on its own. With some help, it tries to start. With an empty tub it will spin, but it is still stiff. With clothes in the tub, it just sits there spinning the belt squeaking. I am thinking that some bearings are bad. I am sure the belt needs replacing and I have one. However, even with a good belt, the tub is stiff and the motor can not get the spin going.

the washed portion of stacked unit is not fully washing clothes. i ran with the lid open and observed that the agitator spins a small amount (approx. 1/8 of a turn) during the wash cycles - basically not enough to really churn up the water and detergent effectively. i removed the large plastic agitator from the inside of the drum and didn't notice damage to the teeth that engage it on the shaft. the shaft will spin freely in either direction by hand. the belt on the bottom of the unit is spinning normally. any suggestions for further trouble shooting steps, or an idea of what my be wrong with the washer?

Latest Questions

I have a GE stackable washer. It was brought to my attention that the clothes were not coming out very clean even with pre treated and minimal dirt on the clothing. I observed the washer through all of its various cycles and noticed that the agitator was not spinning in the agitation cycle, yet the motor was running. I then opened up the front access panel to observe the transmission. The belt was not broken and the flywheels were turning but the shaft was not. I inspected the agitator and nothing was broken on the agitator itself. I suspect there may be something wrong with the transmission. I did some research and what I found suggested that the drive block might need to be replaced. Whats your opinion?

Washer sounds like a machine gun when it is in spin cycle.
