I recently asked a question regarding reducing a 6" round duct to 4" or 5" round for the last several inches of a short ventilation run of approx. 6' for my G.E. over the range microwave. The answer given to this question was to reduce the entire round duct to either 4" or 5". I should have been more specific in my question in that it clearly states in the installation manual not to use anything smaller than a 6" round duct. Vent originates from top of microwave with a 3" x 10.25" duct piece (32.50 sq. in.) converts to a 6" round (28.25 sq. in.) for less than 6 feet with one 90 degree turn. Again, would there be any issue with converting the last several inches of this run with a 4" round duct (12.56 sq. in.)? Would such a small duct, albeit less than a foot, hamper proper ventilation? Thanks again.

I have a G.E. over the range microwave that I want to vent outside. Mapping out the vent route, I have a 3"x 10" piece of ductwork attached to the microwave which converts to a 6" round duct 18" in length. The 6" duct then has a 90 degree left elbow installed and runs for another 36" to the exterior wall. the problem occurs at the exterior wall where I have at best 5" between studs. My question is: Would there be any issue reducing the 6" round ductwork to a 4" or 5" duct for the last approx. 8" of this vent?
