The LG drain assy, pipe - z (part number: ap4438776) on my refrigerator has become burned (from resting against the heat coils) and has crumbled to bits. Does this provide any function? Does it need replaced? Thanks!
Answer Hello Hondo,
The drain directs the defrost water into the drain pan. If the water gets in the floor, it can cause damage that would cost more than the replacement of the part so, yes sir, I would say that it would be a good idea to replace it. Now the important thing is, can you situate it so it will not contact the coils? I would also suggest to access the installation of the unit. Is there at least 3 inches of clearance between the back of the unit and the wall? Is there room around the unit with at least an inch across the top for air circulation. The whole reason I'm asking is that it should not be getting hot enough to cause this damage, even if the drain is against the condenser coils. The excessive heat is an indication that there is insufficient air flow around the unit. We need to make sure that you will only have to make this repair one time.
