Parts of the seal nut has ground up in the base. Can this be fixed with just a new seal nut?
If the seal nut is bad then you would just need to replace the seal nut. Check other things that could cause it to get damaged but the nut should be all needed.

Can I use a pipe wrench to remove the tub nut seal?
Answer Hello Ed. It is not recommended to use a pipe wrench to remove the tub nut. It can break the tub nut. You will need to use the nut seal tool TJ22002898 and the spanner wrench TJSHSW-1. Hope this helps.
