Friend gave me a used refrigerator, but warned me it was broken. I plugged in refrigerator and it was making a knocking noise. Took off the back panel and the knocking noise is coming from the compressor. Seems to be cooling, fan is working but knocking noise. It is a Kenmore, can you help me out? Do I need a compressor kit or compressor with starter kit?
Answer Hello James,
If the sound is coming from the compressor, it has an issue that will require a sealed system repair. This will require a compressor and a filter/drier. The part needed will be determined by the model number of the unit. This is located in the fresh food compartment on the units' I.D. tag, (usually on or near the ceiling of the unit).
