How to change GE refrigerator filter housing?
To replace the filter housing you will need to pull the unit out from the wall and shut off the water supply. Once off remove the lower access panel on the back of the refrigerator. Take the water line loose that comes down from the filter from the water valve. Remove the cover over the lines where they enter the refrigerator and disconnect the other water line that goes to the house supply. Once this is completed you will go to the front of the unit and remove the cover then remove the remove the screws at the top that hold the filter housing in place. Remove the housing and install the new one in reverse.
What is the correct water filter head? Thanks and best regards.
Answer George, the housing and tubing is par number WR17X11920 and the cover is part number WR02X10621. Thanks!
I long time ago I decided to change the water filter. When I did the filter blasted off (a lot of pressure) to the extent I was worried I would have broken the shelf. I put the new filter on and found the pressure was was down. I left it that way for several days (knowing you can get air in the lines) but the pressure never improved. I reverted to the old filter for a few days and it was just as poor. I even emptied the unit completely, thawed it and retested without change. I suspect this is the first part to try replacing, but I also wonder about the valves. Any advice appreciated!
Answer Hello Dafydd,
You should pull the unit out and turn off the water. Remove the water supply line from the back of the unit and place it into a bucket, (or plastic trash can so not to make a mess), and turn the water back on. If full water pressure is there, replace the water inlet valve. If sufficient water pressure is not there, you will need to verify the water supply is not connected to the home water supply with a self tapping saddle valve. If it is, you will need to turn the water off to the home and remove the saddle valve long enough to drill the hole in the home water line out to 1/4 of an inch. If the water supply is not connected with a self tapping saddle valve, you may need to contact a plumber to determine the low water pressure cause.
No water is going through the new filter.
Answer Hello Jerry,
If water was going through the old filter, the issue may be the new filter. If you still have the old filter, you can try re-installing it to see if it passes water. It isn't unheard of to have a bad new part. If the old filter also doesn't pass water, the water tank can be frozen or the water line in the door can be frozen. The best way to prevent this is to run the freezer at 0°F to 10°F with out ever dropping below 0°F. The fresh food side should run between 35°F to 38°F. At these temperatures, the units fans should kick on often enough to prevent cold air migration which contributes to lines and tanks freezing.
I can do some repairs and I have basic instruments only. I need to replace this filter assembly as my current one is flowing too slow. When I took out the filter, the water was still running from the assembly. I think something is wrong in the assembly unit. Anyways, is it too difficult to change this assembly?
Answer Hello Das,
It isn't terribly hard to change this part out, but first you should do a few checks. Turn the water off to the unit and disconnect the water line. Place the water line into a plastic waste basket or bucket. Turn the water back on and make sure you have a good flow and sufficient water pressure. If this checks out good, reattach the waterline to the unit and remove the screws holding the valve to the unit. Hold this over your bucket and have someone hit the button for the water dispense. If you have sufficient water pressure there, every unit comes with a water filter bypass plug. Insert the bypass plug where the filter usually goes and try the water dispense. If the water comes out fine, the water filter probably just needed changed. If the water pressure is still low, then you can proceed to replace the filter tube and assembly.
What is the difference between part# AP3855308 & AP3414864 filter head assemblies. The parts illustration shows both for my refrigerator.
Answer Hello Bill. GE uses two different assemblies in different models. The correct filter head assembly for your model is part number WR17X11618. Have a great day.
