Answer Hello Rob. If you only have two wires feeding the element than yes you will need to use the plate that comes with the kit. It does bridge the two free ends. One of the two wires will also attach to one of the screws that secure it into place. If you have three wires feeding your old element then the bridge will not be used.

Answer Hello Ben. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the switch may be bad in the unit. It sounds like the element is working, if it heats up. Hope this helps.
