Would the tub spinning instead of the agitator indicate a failing transmission? GE Profile top-load washer.
Answer Hello Dab. It could be the transmission. First try to see if the motor is running in the same direction during agitation verses spin. If the motor is going in the same direction, you most likely have a bad timer. If the motor is changing directions, you have a bad transmission. Hope this helps.

Washer makes a very loud howling noise when it is in high speed spin what is the most probable repair.
Answer Hello Darrell. If it sounds like a bearing issue, you will need to replace the transmission WH38X10002 on the unit.
After fill of water when the wash cycle starts there is a loud noise and it seems the motor is pulling really hard to get everything going. Have noticed what appears to be some type of oil on the floor coming from under the machine. this is a top load.
With there being oil under the unit and the unit being difficult to agitate the issue would be in the transmission assembly. The part number for the transmission is WH37X0036 which unfortunately the transmission has been discontinued by the manufacturer with no replacement available.
Should transmission move in both direction. My motor runs in a counter clockwise direction, but transmission at pully will only move in a clockwise direction.
The motor on your unit is designed to rotate both directions. It will spin counter clockwise for spin and clockwise for agitate. The transmission will only be able to be spun by hand in one direction which is clockwise.
Ge washer did not spin. Now when it spins when it spins sounds like a jet and going way to fast.
Answer Hello Mike. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the tub bearings are bad on the unit.
