The first thing that crosses my mind as a technician is if there is any lint build-up in the collector that is holding the filter up too high. The only filter you can order for the unit is 5231EL1003B. If your old one isn't malformed, the new one will sit in the collector the same way. I would get a condenser coil brush TJ103 and a vacuum cleaner and clean the collector out as good as I could and see if the filter will sit all the way down.
