Hello~I have a Kenmore Series 80 washer that is having agitator problems. First, the agitator base/augur/agitator is coming loose during the washing cycle, so much so that it actually can (very easily) be pulled out of the washer (one whole piece). This has happened before and we were able to screw it back on but that is no longer working. Now, not only is the agitator needing twisting (rotating the base one way and the top piece of the agitator the other way keeps it coming completely out so easily) it is no longer agitating. The washer fills, spins, and drains completely but the clothes are not getting as clean and the detergent isn't mixing well. Is it possible to fix it?
Answer Corie, Yes it is possible to "fix" your washer. You first have to determine why the agitator is loose and coming up and off the agitator shaft. There is a 7/16 in. bolt and washer that hold the agitator assembly to the shaft. You'll need to remove the agitator cap, then the cover and ring, to check the bolt. You'll also want to remove the agitator, and check the "dogs" and cams 285810 for excess wear and damage or distortion, this could cause the agitator auger to operate eratically, the auger should move freely in one direction only(counter clockwise) if it will turn in either direction, the dogs and cams will need to be replaced
My maytag quit sprayers but still pumps.
Answer Hello Walt. We will need your model number to help you with this. Please post your model number with a new question on the parts page. http://www.appliancepartspros.com/modelnumber_locator.aspx
Trying to service agitator by installing new cam kit. Can't get the bottom agitator lowered on the splined shaft and hold down bolt will not reach when assembling both halves of the agitator for reinstall. Any suggestions short of buying a new agitator assembly?
Answer Hello Paul,
This sounds like you may have gotten the cam driven bearing or the cam itself mis-installed. I would dis-assemble it one more time to insure that the items are placed in the correct order and not upside down. Please don't take this the wrong way as experienced technicians make the mistake and have to go through the same process. Also the parts you put in should have looked like the ones you removed. It is possible to have the wrong kit.
The top part of my agitator spins freely should that do that or not? If so, should I replace the whole thing? Thank you.
Answer Hello Ryan! The top agitator is only suppose one way, not both. If it turns both, the cam and dogs will need to be replaced. Your cam kit part number is 285809. Thanks!
The top of the agitator spins freely in both directions without the bottom part moving. Should it do that?
Answer Hello Jeff! The top agitator is only suppose one way, not both. If it turns both, the cam and dogs will need to be replaced. Your cam kit is part number 285809. Thanks!
I put the whole agitator on and tightened down the screw but the tabs still didn't lock and now I can't get the screw out. The top and bottom agitator are moving but the same way, I can't turn the clothes mover with my hand.
Answer Hello Myra. It sounds like the agitator bolt is cross threaded. If installed properly, it will compress the two pieces of the agitator 3951744 and lock the tabs into place. You will need to try to hold the agitator and remove the bolt, and see if you can get it to thread into the tramsmission correctly. Hope this helps.
I replaced the agitator. Put the bolt in and tightened it down but the top still freely spins. Is there somthing im missing? Does the top part snap onto the bottom? Or is it suppose to spin?
Answer Hi Keith. The agitator dogs will catch the inner sides as you turn it clockwise but releases as you turn it counterclockwise. The agiator has a top and bottom that snap together to form 1 piece. Then slides on and bolts to the top of the transmission shaft. Then the fabric cup snaps into the top. The unit can be lifted up and leaned carefully back. If you see any black rubber dust under the transmission, replace the motor coupler part # is 285753A. Thank you.
