On the last spinning cycle, the machine made a loud snap like noise and then began to smell like burning rubber. The machine continued to work but the smell got more intense. What would cause this?

When put into a spin cycle, my washer makes a loud and fast clicking noise, the tub does not spin, and the agitator turns weakly. I recently replaced the motor coupling with the newer metal-reinforced model after finding that the old one had broken, and when I checked the coupling out this time, it was fine. I am hoping this is a bad clutch, but is there any way to tell for sure, and that it's not the transmission that's the problem?

My washer stopped spinning so I checked the coupler and that is ok. I pulled the clutch out and seems ok. The spring moves but I really have to put some force on it which I heard is normal. When the washer is tipped it sometimes starts to spin again. Any thoughts?
