Is my compressor bad? Is it worth fixing? The unit is 9 yrs old, but original cost was $1300. My refrigerator nor freezer are cooling at all. Woke up this morning to water on the floor from ice melting, food thawing in freezer, food not cold in refrigerator. Motor seems to be running, but making a louder hum than usual, lights on inside.

Answer Tammera,
You will want to check to see if the fans are running. If the fans are running then check to see if the compressor is running. If the compressor is not running check to make sure that the condenser fan is running. Unplug the unit and pull the relay off the side of the compressor and give it a shake. If it rattles then the relay is bad and would need to be replaced.
I got your answer, but I need more help.

Answer Hello trungkenmore. Dealing with the freon like you are, you will need to have an HVAC tech come and repair the unit.
I replaced capacitor on my 11 year old KitchenAid Superbra Refrigerator model#KSRS251KWH01. The freezer will make ice the first couple of hours and then won't maintain temperature. The compressor kicks on and off like temperature is satisfied but ice melts and refrigerator gets above 40F. I think i need new control board but i can't find repair manual to find part needed. What do you think?
Phil for Model Number KSRS251KW01
Answer Phil,
If the compressor is kicking on and off every couple of minutes then the problem would be the relay 8201786. Also check to make sure that the condenser fan motor is running. The unit only has one control board on it and is the defrost control board. This would not have anything to do with the unit thinking that it is cold enough to shut compressor down. You will also want to check for the condenser coils being dirty as this can also cause compressor to cycle too much.
How long should a compressor last before replacement is needed and how long typically would an other installed one last?
Randy for Model Number jcb2388g
Answer Hello Randy,
Of course there is the human factor that always throws a curve into the mix, but on average, the compressor will out last the rest of the appliance. This is, at this time for a refrigerator, approximately a nine year life span, as estimated by the manufacturers. If the compressor is changed out, the compressor will normally only last as long as the quality of the workmanship of the installer. This is all disregarding the occasional "bad out of the box" that is to be expected due to not being perfect parts.
What type of freon does this refrigerator use? I plan on replacing the compressor and will have to charge the unit. What is the capcity and where are the charging ports located? Any help would be appreciated

Answer Hello Kurt,
This unit should take R134a. You should always verify by looking at the serial tag to make sure what type it does take. The tag will also have the amount required to recharge unit. This compressor W10309994 comes with a new filter drier which has is the high side port. You would have to install a low side port in order to charge system.
Replacing compressor with Whirlpool PN W10309994 the kit includes a relay/overload assembly and run capacitor in addition to the relay overload assembly which was attached to the Embaco EGYS90HLP compressor. The original compressor did not include a run capacitor. Is the run capacitor necessary ?

Answer Hello L. N.,
The reason the new compressor came with a capacitor is that the design is different and without it, you're going to have problems. When a new compressor is ordered, it isn't necessarily the same design as the old one, so if it comes with parts the old one didn't have, the difference is in the design of the replacement compressor and all included parts must be used for satisfactory results.
