My freezer is still frozen but the refrigerator is getting warm. This has happened several times. We always unplug it and thaw it out and it is fine for a few weeks and then happens again. What do we do??

Answer Melissa, it sounds like you have a defrost system failure. You will need to test the heater 12729128, defrost thermostat W10165425, and electronic control 12784415. I have a 6 year old Jenn Aire Side by Side, works great, just a loud clicking noise coming from upper left hand side as you face the unit. It runs for a while and then when you open the freezer door it will stop, until closed again. I think it may some type of timer motor since it is not on all the time. What is your opinion and how hard is it to replace? Do you have YouTube video on it, I am very handy! Thanks in advance,

The food in my freezer was thawing, it acted and sounded like the defrost mode was stuck on. Could the defrost timer cause this? I emptied the freezer out and put a thermometer in it and then turned it all of the way up; it cooled down to approx. 11 degrees. Now I don't hear the defrost mode being on.

Answer Hello Jerry, Yes this could be a defrost timer issue if the defrost timer is not coming out of the defrost. Also listen to make sure that the evaporator fan is operating. If it is not operating then you would want to check for 120vac coming to it.

Freezer is cold reffridgerator is warm and runs all the time. I have continuity across heater terminals and continuity across defrost thermostat when cold. Should I look at defrost timer?

With the defrost timer removed from unit, I dont have continuity between terminals 1 and 3. Is timer bad?

Answer Roberta, The defrost timer is a good possibility but it's a bit more common for the heater fail 61002045 or a loose connection at the defrost thermostat or bad thermostat 61005254 You'll need to remove the freezer back wall to access and check the heater, thermostat and wiring. Ice in tray starting to melt so i did some checks, asked a question here and found defroster cycle was not working correctly, made diagnosis and replaced defroster thermostat and also defrost timer, now defrost cycle is working correctly however the unit turns off and stays off untill temps in freezer hit 45-50 degrees. Local repairman says the compressor is getting to hot and shutting off . Temp. at the compressor is about 138 degrees. Woke up this morning and unit was off, temp in freezer is 45 and compressor temp is 78 degrees. If compressor was shutting down cause of overheating then once temps drop shouldn`t the unit turn on again? Any direction would be helpfull.

Answer William, Based on the post, it sounds more like a crossed or shorted wire at the defrost thermostat or defrost timer ? I wouldn't start at the compressor, until I rechecked the wiring at the new components and maybe the temperature control. Thanks and Good Luck.

Ice is melting in tray, ice maker is working but it appears that it melts then re freezes. I noticed that refrigerator is not running even though temp is above freezing. I removed the back cover in the freezer and coil was frozen so I switched the defroster timer to defrost and element did not heat up. I did not have continuity over defrost t-stat so I replaced it and now element gets hot. After a couple days the unit seems to be better but ice cream is not solid and temp goes up to 33 degrees in freezer I`m assuming while in defroster mode. Can defroster cycle take to long and cause this? Should I also replace timer? Unit is 10 years old. Thanks

Answer Hello William. You will need to check and make sure you melt all the ice off the coils where they were frozen over. If there is ice still on the coils, it will cause the unit not to cool properly. If it is sticking in defrost, you will need to replace the timer 68233-3. Hope this helps.

should there be a continuity ready across 3 and 1. there is a resistor? between them 39k o>. is there a way to verify it is working.

Answer Kurt, Yes there should be a continuity reading between terminals 1 and 3 at the defrost timer. On the RX1 setting , you would read a closed circuit. the 39K ohms, is the timer motor winding resistance and the resistor. If the resistor was bad, you'd have no resistance reading. Good Luck.
