I have a 2006 Whirlpool Calypso Washing Machine that won't drain. I have a guy come out and clear a clog, but I guess the clog also stripped the ring gear inside the drain pump. My home warranty insurance decided to cash out my claim, but it seems simple enough to replace on my own, after having watched how the guy opened up the washer (I helped him). My questions: 1) could I just replace the stripped ring gear or should I replace the whole drain pump? 2) if I replace the drain pump are there any special tools needed or other replacement parts needed to fix it? 3) for this model, is there a way to test whether I installed it correctly? 4) any other recommendations for this kind of DIY job? Thanks so much !!

Answer Hello Lealon. Based on the information you provided, you just need to order and replace the pump and motor assembly on the unit. There is no special tools needed, and it is best to lean the washer back, use a block to support it and remove the pump from the bottom of the unit with the power and water disconnected.

My washer stopped draining water. I have located the pump and drained all the water from the unit. I would like to know if this is a water pump failure. Buying the pump which is 115 + shipping . It could be an expensive error if this is not the solution. There is no errors reported in the front panel. Thanks for your time to answer my question

Answer Hello Tony. Test for power to the pump. If there is power there, and the pump does not drain, replace the pump 285990. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Answer Hello RK. You do not need to remove the panel, you replace the pump 285990 through the bottom of the unit, not the top. Lean the washer back and look from under the bottom and you will see the pump.

What can I do with a ld error code? Looked at drain pipe and it is not clogged, but the tub is filled with water. Please advise.

When I run a cycle (quick cycle for example) the machine runs for about 10 minutes then it starts leaking water from the bottom and the it stops with either an ob or an ld code. Does this mean the drain pump needs to be replaced? There is no water coming out of he hose.

Answer Angie, You're on track. A clogged or defective drain pump, could create the "OB" or "LD" error codes, and will need to be checked for articles stuck in the tub to pump hose 8054944 and 8054988 the pump itselft could be clogged as well. If all's OK, replace the drain pump 285990. Thanks

Notice about 3 cups of water below machine on floor. Removed bottom panel. Inspected pump. Area around the seal of the pump drive shaft was damp/wet. I see that the "pump replacement" is now a "pump/motor assembly replacement". Any advice /comments you could provide? Can you advise degree of difficulty to replace the entire assembly?

Answer Hello Russ. The pump and motor assembly 285990 is not to hard to replace. Just lean the washer backwards and remove the bolts, hoses and wires going to the old pump and install the new pump and motor assembly.

The washer continues to come with an OB code. This code appears even when I run it through the cycle empty. I am asssuming it is the pump but would like to confirm this is possible when I know it is not out of balance and before ordering the repair pump.

Answer Hello Chris. If the unit is draining properly, then the pump should be fine. If it is spinning before the water drains out, you will need to replace the pump 285990. You will want to check the shock and suspension rods and make sure they are good, and the unit is not getting off balance. Hope this helps.

Washer is only 8 yrs old.a few weeks ago the washer would attempt to complete a cycle but it sounded like cycle was attempting to complete but I could hear it comming on and going off during this time the timer would not move if I pushed the stop button opened the lid,shutthe lid then after a beep or 2 push start it would complete the wash,I am not getting any codes at all. Ran diagnoistics tests and everyhing was complete with no issues, Then used the washer a few times after that no issues at all,then the same issue occurs again,this time I start to get some humming, follow the same steps as before then wash completes, now attempted to wash 2 day washers fills up on whites cycle, then I hear a beep I go to washer I have an FL code with a flooded floor water from the washer I shut washer off unplug still hear water going in washer then I shut the water valve off. later plug washer in attempt to drain with spin/ rinse cyle I have humming,again no codes. also sounds like motor is trying to work but doesnt water again comes from under washer.shut off, unplugged. Ran diagnostic tests again all is well completed the tests with no issues.everything filled, spun and drained fine with test.replaced the machine control board, turned on, washer fills partially and stops filling then get humming again.Please help...

Answer Hello Kim. Make sure both the hot and cold water valve 9724754 is working properly. This could be where the hum is coming from. If the hum is from the motor, replace the motor control board 8541034. Hope this helps.

I have a whirlpool calypso washer. It does not complete its cycle. There is no error code on the display. When In Automatic Service Diagnostics Mode it will start and stop when the display is reading anywhere in between 80 seconds and one seconds (steps two through five in consumer services technical education manual L-67). I am thinking that it is the pump motor assembly, because in the steps indicated it is either recirculating or draining. When it is in normal wash mode the whole machine stalls, and then restarts. Please advise.

Answer Hello Victor. It sounds like the control board or the pump is the problem. Check and see if the pump is working properly, and if there is power to it. I have an FL code. I have learned that this is a flood control code. It also said that if you remove clothes it should recycle and start working. Not happening. I cut power and plugged back in cause that is suppose to reset. didnt happen. Just keeps beeping and flashing FL. I pulled the front cover off and the pump motor is warm and huming. is it bad???

Answer Les, You're on the right track, Check the drain pump for a clogged/stuck article, or replace it. " With an overfill condition, the beeper repeats a warning every 10 seconds with no time out. The pump is cycled in drain mode for 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off until the overfill switch resets or power is discontinued to the unit."
