My washer was making a screeching type noise for about a month. Then the other night it stopped was still in the spin cycle seem to be running ok, but I smelled something like burned rubber and when I stopped it and opened it up it was smoking. I took it apart and there was like black dust and black pieces that I assumed was the break pads. I need to know if thats what it is and how to replace them.

We replaced several parts , including the bearings and put everything back as we found it. I have now noticed that when it is agitating, the inner tub tub moves back with the agitator about 5 inches at a time. Is this normal or should the inner tub not move at all as it agitates. Thanks

Hello. Smelled burnt rubber. Opened front and top. Belt looked ok. Ran washer and wash cycle seemed normal. Spin cycle was a bit bangy? and I noticed the agitator going back and forth during spin cycle while the basket was spinning? What would you think it would be.

Replaced burned belt, seems to be running ok, however, machine seems louder than usual. Don't know why belt burned as it was only two years old. Could broken brake pads be creating a drag causing the belt to burn? Is there a way to know the brake pads are bad without tearing it all down?

My brake pads are off, but not damaged. Looks like the bolts eventually fell off. I for the life of me can not figure how they go back on in relation to the brake rotor. I see slight wear marks, circular, which suggest that they have some interaction with the rotor but if I try to put them against the brake rotor it obviously impedes the machine when it needs to rinse spin. Coupled with this I have the plastic helix, along with, the spin pulley, jumping up & down making a racket & the basket will barely spin. My question is, if the brake shoes are installed correctly( a pic would be nice ) will this then fix the problem with my spin pulley / helix?

My Machine makes a very load noise only when it is about to agitate since when the spin cycle runs there is absolutely no noise whatsoever. Sometimes it does make the noise when it is about to stop. When I opened the bottom panel all 3 Brake Pads were not attached and in various pieces at the bottom of the machine. So it does seem obvious to me that the brake pads need to be replaced. When installing the pads do the sides further from the screw holes face in toward the metal pieces at the bottom of the tub. It also appears that these brake pads should go between these metal pieces if you know what I mean. Any help about how to place the pads when installing would be appreciated. I also watched these metal pieces when it ran after filling at the start and it appears that the upper metal piece would vibrate quite a bit and it seems to be what is causing the loud noise. So it seems that if the brake pad was between the upper and lower piece the noise may stop. If you could clarify that this is what the brake pad does that would further convince me that this will solve the problem and it is not something else. Thanks in advance for your help.

Through the wonderful internet I have determined that the brakes are not working on my Amana ALW880QAW Washing Machine. The brakes on my machine just have 1 screw in each brake but there is 2 holes. I think they may have fallen out but have not found them. Looks like the replacement kit comes with 4 screws based on the picture. I would have expected either 3 or 6. How many screws should each brake have in it? I don't see how they would work without 2 screws.
