My washer will agitate but will not spin. It pumps water out fine. There is a smell of burning belts as well. Should I replace both belts?

My Maytag washer makes an intermittent screeching noise only in the agitation cycle and noise is more pronounced with heavier loads and/or high water levels. The unit is close to 20 years old and works fine outside of the screeching noise. There is no noise in the spin cycle. The belts have never been replaced and there is no noticeable water or oil leakage under the unit. A visual inspection of belts indicates some wear but they are not falling apart. Question: Are drive belts the probable cause for this noise or would a more likely cause be a bearing issue? Or perhaps both? If a bearing is likely cause, is there a particular bearing in clutch, transmission, motor or tub that would be priority to check? Thanks in advance for your feedback.

While looking for a water leak I found the the pump belts to be stickey, and in very bad condition. The belt was falling apart in my hands it possible this is the cause for a leak? recently used washer in a Permanent press cycle, stopped agitating and spinning. will fill to correct water levels and shut down. no movement in dial whatsover. When manually turned to Heavy, med , light to agitate, nothing happens. Nothing happens in spin cycle either Lidswitch actuator making one click. Took out agitator, set on its back to inspect pullys. (2112425) pump pully seems ok but little worn, drive belt very loose,(the drive belt is a little biggerthan the pump belt) tried to adjust pump pully, then drive pully by pulling the motor, drive pully still too loose to spin drive. Is this possibly the only issue? I think im losing power after the fill cycle? Dan

Burning smell coming from washer. Bought new belts from you and replaced. Still have smell and washer quits during rinse/spin cycle. Motor is hot to the touch. Seems like if I let the washer sit (maybe let motor cool off) I can restart the spin cycle and it will finish. Seems to be the motor. Just wanted to ask before spending $140. Thanks!!
