Washer fills but will not agitate just hear a humming then it stops will spin the water out of the tub is it the transmission that is bad?

You will want to check to see if the motor is running during agitation. If the motor is not running then you will want to pull the belt and see if the motor runs. If not then the motor is bad and if it does then the transmission.
