We are going around in circles. We have already agreed that checking the thermostat for continuity would be appropriate if the dryer is getting NO heat (ie. thermostat not closing...circuit not complete...no power to heating element). We have the opposite case here...TOO MUCH heat. So, the question is how do you test the thermostat to determine if is is shutting OFF (opening...and shutting the heat off) appropriately ? Thanks.

Yes, I've verified that all the air ducts are clear...even pulled the blower and lubricated the shaft (it was running free but was improved with a little oil). But again, the question is...how do I test that the thermostat is stuck closed?

When spin cycle starts, there is a high pitched squeal. (One of the belts recently broke but it was squealing before. I replaced both belts.) It soulds like a bearing but after the speed builds up, the squeal stops. Is it likely to be a bearing ? Must it be replaced or can it be lubricated ? Or is it a different problem ? The washer is over 30 years old.
