Our washer is about 8 years old. Sometime back my wife noticed that the agitator was spinning in one direction. She asked me if it was suppose to turn in only one direction or go back and forth. I could not remember and don't have the answer. Can you tell me if our model spins in one direction only, or two? and, if it is broken, does it need the cam kit assembly (or what) to make the appropriate repair?

I have an older washing machine and the agitator (this particular style is two parts) comes off during spin cycles. It will sometimes come loose during the wash cycle as well, especially with heavier loads of clothing. The top half of the agitator is what comes off. I took it apart and I believe the upper housing is supposed to contain a cam shaft with the dogs in it and that entire cam isn't there. I am curious as to whether buying this part will fix it or if i need to replace the entire agitator system including the base piece.

Is there a plastic ring or washer that goes between the two agitator parts? I just put in new agitator dogs but there is nothing between the two agitator parts to hold them together?
