My Ice Maker compressor tries to start but cannot. Overload gets very hot. I'd like to try a hard start device first before giving up on the compressor. However, I am not sure how much HP this compressor has, and therefore I am not sure which Hard Start unit to buy... if anyone know, thanks!

My 7 year old Maytag fridge makes a grinding noise when trying to start. I replaced the capacitor and the starter relay but it makes the same sound. If i let it cool for several hours then it will start fine and run (and slowly cool) for 5 or 6 hours until the temp is cold. When it trys to start again it makes the grinding noise for 10 seconds and shuts off. It will continue this grinding shut off cycle until i unplug the fridge and let it cool for several hours and then when I plug it in it starts and slowly cools until the temp is again low enough and it cycles off. Could I have a somewhat pluged orifice tube that is creating enough back pressure that the compressor motor can't start unless the compressor sits idle for several hours?

The attached appliance model # is a Kitchen Aid standalone ice maker that is 7 years old. It stopped making ice all of a sudden. I can see water running over the chill plate and it drains through the pan water and into the water bucket. Thought I heard compressor coming on when I first power it up. I replaced the start relay and overload relay and that did not work. The compressor feels warm/hot to the touch. Is it supposed to feel warm or hot? Is there anything else this could be besides the compressor? Could it be thermostat or is there a start capacitor? Thanks, Kevin

Upon returning to our summer home, found fridge not working at all, except for lights and fans. I checked that power was getting to compressor and it was. I don't hear the expected sound of the compressor working. Copper tubing in and out aren't hot or cold. Since I don't see access ports to screw on a pressure gauge as in a car AC, how can one tell if there is R134 in the system or not, and/or the compressor itself isn't working?I can measure the AC current. Would that help in the diagnosis? Thanks for any help on this. P.S. Is my estimate of $400 to $500 for a compressor replacement and R134 recharge way out of line?

My refridgerator or freezer is not cooling.. the compressor is still vibrating, I had a technician come out and look at the unit and at first I was told it is not the compressor, but then he changed his mind and said it was either compressor or the frion *spell*... Is there some type of diagnostics that can be done so I know for sure?? I hate to pay money and not even fix the correct problem??
