What role does the thermostatic switch [defrost bimetal] play in the defrost cycle? What should be it's condition at room temp? What low [how low?] temp?

Defrost cycle isn't working leading to ice clogged circulation vents. I am guessing 3 possible causes but would like to narrow it down. Defrost heater element ap3997341. Defrost thermostat ap3108445 though I don't see this in any of the diagrams. Defrost timer ap3110896. Based on other questions I see in association, all I need to check is contiuity on the parts to determine the failure point? If the heater element shows continuity and the thermostat when cold shows continuity then it is the timer? Should it show continuity or a specific resistance ohlm value? Thanks. Mike.
